International Women’s Day is globally celebrated each year on March 8. On March 19, 1911, International Women’s Day was officially celebrated for the first time in the known history. On 8 March 1917, women factory workers in Russia went on to strike demanding end to World War 1 and supply of food. In recognition to the role these women played towards defence of their nation and selflessness, March 8 was declared as International Women’s Day. The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975, which was declared ‘International Women’s Year’.
